Bethesda stokes Hunted: The Demon’s Forge June 1

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 27, 2011

Violent co-op fantasy action game from inXile Entertainment dated; European launch to follow on June 3.

Bethesda Softworks' Demon's Forge is heating up. The publisher today announced its fantasy action game Hunted: The Demon's Forge would arrive in North America on June 1 and in Europe two days later.

Originally announced last year, Hunted places a heavy emphasis on cooperative play. Players will take on the role of either the master swordsman Caddoc or the ranged weapon expert E'lara, as they work together to figure out what's behind a rash of disappearing townsfolk. Gameplay will focus on cover-based combat and puzzle-solving, coupled with exploration of dungeons, ruins, and urban areas.

Hunted is in development at inXile Entertainment, best known for the Line Rider franchise of physics-based puzzle games, as well as its 2004 PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC revamp of The Bard's Tale role-playing game franchise. The studio also worked on Codemasters' crime-action game Hei$t, although that project was cancelled after several years in development.

Star Wars: The Old Republic delayed – Report

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 26, 2011

BioWare sources cited for tip that long-awaited space-bound MMORPG will miss projected spring 2011 debut, with launch now planned for September.

A year ago Electronic Arts announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic--BioWare's massively multiplayer online role-playing game take on the esteemed film series--would arrive during the spring 2011 window. However, according to one report, the publisher was a bit ambitious with that date.

Game business site MCV is reporting that sources within BioWare have informed it that the long-awaited PC MMORPG will arrive at an undisclosed date in September. As of press time EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment or clarification on the purported delay.

SW:TOR is currently in testing phase, where BioWare-selected bug squashers are traversing the game's universe, said to be bigger than every BioWare game released to date…put together.

SW:TOR--which EA will publish solo--takes place approximately 300 years after the events of the original game but some 3,600 years before the events of LucasArts' quintessential films. Players can choose to align themselves with either side of the Force, taking on professions like the Sith warrior and bounty hunter for the Dark Side and the trooper and smuggler for the Galactic Republic.

For more on the MMORPG, check out GameSpot's preview of SW:TOR, as well as a narrative analysis from Comic-Con 2010.

Homefront developer might move to Montreal

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 25, 2011

Head of New York-based Kaos Studios says goal was always to involve Quebec location with its future projects, but final decision on how hasn't been made yet.

Kaos Studio's upcoming first-person shooter Homefront is about an American resistance force fighting back a Korean invasion, but the next chapter in the developer's story may be about leaving the country rather than protecting it. According to a Develop report, employees of New York City-based Kaos are concerned that THQ could relocate the operation to its new Montreal, Quebec, facilities, forcing them to move along with the job or find new work.

Kaos general manager David Votypka told the site he was well aware of employees' concerns in that regard, saying THQ is considering a number of possible scenarios. However, he said he didn't expect a decision to be made "for some time yet."

"With the opening of the THQ Montreal studio the goal has always been to find a way to utilize that studio in future Kaos projects," Votypka told Develop, adding, "Seeing as New York is not the most inexpensive location to develop games, utilizing Montreal one way or another is understandable."

THQ first announced the Montreal studio in December of 2009, with plans to increase its size to 400 people by 2015. Government incentives and a deep pool of talent have made the town a popular development destination for publishers, as THQ's facility joined major operations from Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, Eidos, and Funcom in the city.

Russian media links airport bombing, Modern Warfare 2

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 25, 2011

State-sponsored Russia Today channel says Call of Duty game "mirrors" Monday's suicide bombing outside Moscow.

On Monday, tragedy struck outside Moscow when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Domodedovo airport, killing 35 people and injuring 180. In the wake of the massacre, no parties have come forward to claim responsibility, although Chechen separatists, which have mounted similar attacks in the past, are likely to be blamed.

Sadly, though, it appears the Russian media has found something else to blame--video games. As spotted by the New York Times, state-sponsored satellite network Russia Today broadcast a report that juxtaposed security camera footage of the actual attack with clips of the infamous "No Russian" level of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In that mission, players must join in a Mumbai-style attack in a fictional Russian airport, gunning down civilians en masse.

"The bloody scenes of the Moscow attack are reminiscent of what can be seen in a computer game that controversially involves a character who is urged to attack civilians in an imaginary airport," says the anchorwoman, before cutting to a montage of the No Russian level and disturbing images of the real-life attack. Later, the correspondent says that the level "mirrors" the real-life suicide bombing.

The report goes on to quote Fox News terrorism analyst Walid Phares as saying he is concerned that terrorists could be using games as training tools. "I think those who have been radicalized already, let's suppose in this case jihadists [or] Al Qaeda or [some] other kind, they look at the games and say these games will serve them to train."

As of press time, Activision reps had not commented on the Russia Today report.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime oozes out March 23

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 25, 2011

Atari's downloadable series entry lands on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in two months; PC release unannounced.

In early December, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime, the first downloadable entry in the ghoul-corralling series, was outed. It was pegged for a vague spring 2011 release window at the time, but now Atari has announced a firm release date for the game.

According to a tweet from the official Atari Twitter feed, Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime will ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 23. The publisher did not announce a release date for the PC iteration of the title. However, the publisher did note that the PC version will be available online via Atari.com when it is released.

The top-down game set in New York City will be a cooperative adventure title playable online or offline with up to four players. It will drop players into the boots of the Ghostbuster team's newest recruit and task them with working cooperatively to take down "gigantic bosses." Also, gamers will have a range of weaponry at their disposal including the proton stream, plasma inductor, and the fermion shock.

The title is currently in development at Behavior Studios, a downloadable developer best known for the Assault Heroes and 3D Ultra MiniGolf Adventures franchises.

DC Universe Online SOE’s fastest-selling game ever

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 24, 2011

President of Sony Online Entertainment announces superhero MMORPG is an instant hit; tops the Steam software sales leaderboards; PS3 sales not announced.

Sony Online Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role-playing game DC Universe Online is proving to be a massive success for its maker. According to the publisher, the title has used its superhuman strength to become SOE's fastest-selling game ever.

The news comes via the Twitter post of SOE president John Smedley, who said the game is evaporating from store shelves.

"Working on out-of-stock problems for DCUO," he said. "It's out [sic] fastest selling game ever. Should have more inventory in Monday."

Smedley also used the social networking space to tout Steam sales figures. Smedley said DC Universe Online was #1 in sales on Steam last week. He did not offer further specifics as to how well the PS3 iteration is selling.

Set within the DC Comics world, DC Universe Online lets players create a superhero or villain and fight alongside or against iconic comic book characters, such as the Joker, Batman, Superman, and others. It was developed under the creative direction of famed comic book artist Jim Lee.

Shippin’ Out: Jan. 23-29: Dead Space 2, Two Worlds II

GameSpot's PC News | PC Gaming News, Video Game Blog, Xbox 360 News | January 23, 2011

New release slate led by Visceral Games' frightening third-person action game and SouthPeak's RPG; Lord of Arcana and Monday Night Combat for PC also out.

Last week Sackboy made a lauded return to the gaming scene in Little Big Planet 2, but this week's theme is focused more on horrid death.

Leading the week is Visceral Games' Dead Space 2 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The game follows engineer protagonist Isaac Clarke, who fights snarling alien creatures on the Sprawl, an abandoned civilian space station anchored on one of Saturn's moons. The game will be available both in a standard $60 form and in a limited-edition $80 top-tier pack that bundles a replica plasma cutter, along with other goodies.

Also out this week is SouthPeak's Two Worlds II for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. First announced as an expansion pack in 2007, Two Worlds II was initially scheduled for an early 2008 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. However, the fantasy role-playing game then picked up full sequel status, as well as multiple delays. The PC version is due out in February.

Two Worlds II picks back up with the original's hero, after having languished in prison for a number of years. Gamers find themselves first confronting the nefarious Gandahar (the villain from the original), before setting out on a new quest to save the world. The game also includes new cooperative multiplayer modes, where players can work together to build cities or team up to undertake a dozen story-driven quests.

On-the-go gamers looking for something new this week can pick up Square Enix's Lord of Arcana for the PSP. Primed to debut as a download via the PlayStation Network and at brick and mortar retail, the title revolves around a powerful stone called Arcana, said to be "the source of all order in the world."

Only the most powerful can lay claim to the stone, so players will need to hunt scores of monsters--which the publisher says have been designed by "world-renowned artists"--if they want to discover its secrets.

Third-person shooter fans can download Monday Night Combat for the PC this Monday. Originally pegged to be released last week, the game was pushed back a week by developer Uber Entertainment for additional polish. The title was released on Xbox Live Arcade over the summer as part of Microsoft's Summer of Arcade promotion, but come Monday it will no longer be an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Monday Night Combat will be available via Steam with features its XBLA cousin does not have. Dedicated servers, Steam achievements, controller support, "editor support," and unannounced "new features" will come bundled with the Steam edition of the third-person, class-based shooter.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Atari's racing title gets green flag for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 8 in North America, March 11 in EU.

Atari sent word today that following a delay in August, Eden Games' Test Drive Unlimited 2's engine is revved and ready to debut for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 8 in North America.

Test Drive Unlimited 2--due out in Europe on March 11--is being touted as a game that "blends the single and multiplayer experiences seamlessly" by offering gamers what it calls M.O.O.R., an acronym that stands for Massively Open Online Racing.

Additionally, the title sports a day/night cycle, vehicle damage, and weather-based effects, as well as various cosmetic options that will ultimately afford players the "accoutrements of a luxurious car-based lifestyle."

Gamers looking to score additional items and features for the racing title can preorder Test Drive Unlimited 2 at various retails. Those who reserve the title at specialty retailer GameStop will earn the Casino Online downloadable content, while those who preorder the game at Amazon, Best Buy, Atari.com, Direct 2 Drive, K-Mart, Steam, and Wal-Mart will receive an exclusive vehicle. For more on the preorder incentives, check out the entry on Test Drive Unlimited 2's website.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 will see players racing in locations that include the Spanish party hot spot Ibiza and the paradise island of Oahu from the original title. In addition to new vehicles, race types, and a revamped single-player mode that can be played online or off, the game will give players the chance to build and grow in-game clubs composed of friend networks.
